Ukraine crisis: US senators urge arms ‚to fight Russia‘

Leading American senators have called for the US to send weapons to help Ukraine fight what they say is „a Russian invasion“.

The head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Russia must face a cost for its „aggression“.

Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin called for talks to discuss the issue of „statehood“ for eastern Ukraine.

Some 2,600 people have died since fighting erupted between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian troops in April.

U.S. lawmakers call for arming Ukraine government

(Reuters) – U.S. Democratic and Republican lawmakers on Sunday urged Washington to arm the Ukrainian government, saying it needed help to repel what they called Russia’s invasion of the country.

Senator Robert Menendez, who heads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN the United States, European Union and NATO should work together to arm Kiev, which has been fighting Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine for months.

„We … should be providing the Ukrainians with the types of defensive weapons that will impose a cost upon (Russian President Vladimir) Putin for further aggression,“ the New Jersey Democrat told the „State of the Union“ program from Kiev.

Asked whether the Obama administration is considering such a move, Menendez said: „I think that may very well be on the table right now. These are changed circumstances.“

President Barack Obama last week ruled out U.S. military action over Ukraine and called for a diplomatic solution.

The Obama administration has stopped short of calling Moscow’s intensified support for separatist forces in eastern Ukraine an invasion, and has said sanctions are the most effective tool in dealing with Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Republican Senator John McCain from Arizona said he backed sanctions but Ukraine also needed intelligence data and weapons.

„For God’s sake, can’t we help these people defend themselves? This is not an incursion. This is an invasion,“ McCain told CBS’s „Face the Nation“ program. He said Russia could threaten Moldova and the Baltics if it was not stopped.

Representative Mike Rogers, the Republican who heads the House Intelligence Committee, said the United States and Europe needed to provide strategic help to Ukraine now to halt what he called Russia’s increasingly aggressive actions.

„If we don’t provide ‘small and effective’ now, you’re going to get very big and very ugly later,“ Rogers said on „Fox News Sunday.“ „Now is the opportunity to make that decision and … not make the same mistake the president made in Syria.“

Sen. Menendez’s ‘arms for Ukraine’ call merits top headline on BBC, but not on Voice of America English news website

Key American senators, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator John McCain (R-AZ), calling for the U.S. to send weapons to help Ukraine fight what they say is “a Russian invasion,” was top news on the BBC website for much of the day on Sunday, but on the U.S. taxpayer-funded Voice of America (VOA) English news website their call did not even get a separate news item with a separate headline.

The U.S. senators’ call for arms for Ukraine was later included with some delay in the middle of another VOA English news report dealing with the Ukraine crisis, but VOA only mentioned two Democratic senators, only one of whom (Senator Menendez) called for U.S. arms for Ukraine, and ignored a similar call from Senator John McCain, a key Republican in the U.S. Senate. VOA Russian and Ukrainian services, however, posted separate reports on today’s comments by both Senator Menendez and Senator McCain.

Speaking on CNN, Mr Menendez, a Democrat, said: “We should provide the Ukrainians with the type of defensive weapons that will impose a cost upon Putin for further aggression,” BBC reported. “This is no longer the question of some rebel separatists, this is a direct invasion by Russia. We must recognise it as that,” Senator Menendez said, as reported by BBC.

Voice of America English News completely ignored Sunday (as of 9:45 PM EDT) comments about Russian aggression in Ukraine from chief Republican U.S. foreign policy spokesman in the U.S. Senate, Senator McCain.

Senator John McCain said: “This is not an incursion. This is an invasion,” BBC reported.

Senator McCain told CBS’s Face the Nation that Mr Putin was “an old KGB colonel that wants to restore the Russian empire,” BBC also reported.

Mr. McCain called for “strong sanctions”, before adding that Ukraine must be supplied with weapons: “Give them the weapons they need. Give them the wherewithal they need. Give them the ability to fight,” BBC report said.

„Newsticker

Auszug:
